New-hire onboarding checklist
What to prepare before day one, what to show on day one, which checkpoints to test against.
Here’s the thing: at most companies onboarding runs on the mentor’s improvisation, whatever they remember is what they show. The checklist replaces improvisation with a program. It is built from the “New-hire onboarding program” section of the Job Passport and works without us: the mentor opens the document every day and goes through the checkpoints.
- Before day one: access, workstation, tools, who greets the new hire and who mentors them
- Day one: orientation, safety, the order of work on one operation
- Week one: which operations to show in what order and who signs off on the result
- Checkpoints: what the new hire must know and be able to do at each step
- Clearance to work on their own: how the mentor signs off on hands-on practice
